  1. Member of an indigenous people of N Luzon in
  2. the Philippines, numbering approximately
  3. 70,000. Their language belongs to the
  4. Austronesian family. The Ifugao live in
  5. scattered hamlets and, traditionally,
  6. recognise a class of nobles, kadangya, who
  7. are obliged to provide expensive feasts on
  8. particular social occasions. Although
  9. indigenous beliefs remain important, many
  10. Ifugao have adopted Christianity. In addition
  11. to practising shifting cultivation on
  12. highland slopes, they build elaborate
  13. terraced rice fields. Some Ifugao work as
  14. wage labourers outside their highland region.
